The Island Bay Snorkel Trail
The Trail has been established at a carefully selected site within Wellington’s Taputeranga Marine Reserve and aims to provide an opportunity for people to experience the marine diversity of the South Coast and the Marine Reserve. Check out the sign in the car park for safety and marine life information. Look for articles and newsletters on this site to help interpret the marine environment and tell you what to look out for. Click here to check on current conditions for snorkeling.
You can find the Snorkel Trail at the car park just to the east of the ‘Welcome to Island Bay’ sign on The Esplande. The carpark entrance is opposite 194 The Esplanade. Look for the Trail sign and follow the path down to the entry beach and channel out to the first buoy (yellow). Best snorkeling is at half to full tide, though any tide on a good day is rewarding. Enjoy!
Please note that weather conditions can affect the buoys deployed to mark the Snorkel Trail; some may be missing, especially over winter after southerly storms or swells. The Friends endeavour to maintain the complete suite of buoys from Spring onwards.
